ある日ひの午後ごご、アリスはお姉ねいさんと一緒いっしょに川かわの近ちかくで過すごしていました。

One afternoon, Alice was spending time by the river with her older sister.

静しずかで、いつもと変かわらない一日いちにちでした。

It was a quiet day, no different from any other.

しかし、一いっ匹ぴきの白しろいウサギとの出会であいをきっかけに、アリスはまったく知しらない世界せかいへ迷まよい込こんでしまいます。

But an encounter with a white rabbit led Alice into a world she had never known.

そこでは、動物どうぶつたちが人間にんげんのように話はなし、体からだが突然とつぜん大おおきくなったり小ちいさくなったりします。

There, animals talked like people, and her body suddenly grew larger and smaller.

笑わらいながら消きえる猫ねこや、終おわらないお茶会ちゃかい、怒おこってばかりいる女王じょうおうなど、次々つぎつぎに不思議ふしぎな出来事できごとが起おこります。

Strange events followed one after another: a cat that vanished while smiling, a never-ending tea party, and a queen who was always angry.

最初さいしょは驚おどろいてばかりいたアリスですが、さまざまな出会であいを経験けいけんする中なかで、少すこしずつ自分じぶんで考かんがえ、自分じぶんの意見いけんを言ゆうようになっていきます。

At first Alice was constantly surprised, but through her many encounters, she gradually learned to think for herself and express her own opinions.

それでは、アリスと一緒いっしょに、不思議ふしぎな世界せかいへ入はいっていきましょう。

Now, let us enter this mysterious world with Alice.

ある暖あたたかい日ひの午後ごご、アリスは川かわの近ちかくで、お姉ねいさんのそばに座すわっていました。

One warm afternoon, Alice was sitting beside her older sister near the river.

お姉ねいさんは本ほんを読よんでいましたが、その本ほんには絵えも会話かいわもありませんでした。

Her sister was reading a book, but it had no pictures or conversations in it.

アリスは、そんな本ほんを見みてもあまりおもしろいとは思おもえず、だんだん眠ねむくなってきました。

Alice did not find such a book very interesting, and she gradually became sleepy.

そのとき、一いっ匹ぴきの白しろいウサギが近ちかくを走はしっていきました。

Just then, a white rabbit ran past nearby.

白しろウサギは急いそいでいるようで、「大変たいへんだ。遅おくれてしまう」と独ひとり言ごとを言いっていました。

The White Rabbit seemed to be in a hurry and muttered to himself, "Oh no. I'm going to be late."

アリスは少すこし不思議ふしぎに思おもいましたが、もっと驚おどろいたのはそのあとです。

Alice thought this was a little strange, but what happened next surprised her even more.

白しろウサギは服ふくのポケットから時計とけいを出だし、時間じかんを確認かくにんしました。

The White Rabbit took a watch from his coat pocket and checked the time.

時計とけいを持もっているウサギなど、アリスは見みたことがありません。

Alice had never seen a rabbit carrying a watch before.

急きゅうに興味きょうみが湧わいたアリスは立たち上あがり、白しろウサギを追おいかけました。

Suddenly curious, Alice stood up and chased after the White Rabbit.

ウサギは草くさの間あいだにある大おおきな穴あなへ入はいっていきます。

The rabbit went into a large hole among the grass.

アリスも、何なにがあるのかよく考かんがえないまま、その穴あなへ入はいりました。

Without thinking carefully about what might be inside, Alice entered the hole too.

すると、体からだがどんどん下したへ落おちていきました。

Then her body began falling farther and farther down.

穴あなは思おもっていたよりもずっと深ふかく、なかなか下したに着つきません。

The hole was much deeper than she had expected, and she did not reach the bottom for a long time.

最初さいしょは怖こわかったアリスも、しばらくすると周まわりを見みる余裕よゆうが出でてきました。

Alice was frightened at first, but after a while she became calm enough to look around.

穴あなの壁かべには棚たながあり、本ほんや地図ちずなど、いろいろなものが置おいてあります。棚

There were shelves along the walls of the hole, holding books, maps, and many other things.

「いったい、どこまで落おちるんだろう」

"Just how far am I going to fall?"

そんなことを考かんがえながら落おち続つずけ、長ながい時間じかんがたったように感かんじたころ、ようやく地面じめんに着つきました。

As she continued falling and thinking about this, a long time seemed to pass before she finally reached the ground.

幸さいわい、けがはありませんでした。

Fortunately, she was not hurt.

前まえを見みると、白しろウサギがまた走はしっています。

Looking ahead, she saw the White Rabbit running again.

アリスは急いそいであとを追おいましたが、すぐに見失みうしなってしまいました。

Alice hurried after him, but soon lost sight of him.

そこには長ながい部屋へやがあり、たくさんのドアが並ならんでいました。

There was a long room with many doors lined up along its walls.

しかし、どのドアにも鍵かぎがかかっていて、外そとへ出でることができません。鍵

However, every door was locked, so she could not get outside.

部屋へやの真まん中なかには、小ちいさなテーブルがあり、その上うえには金色きんいろの鍵かぎが置おいてありました。

In the middle of the room was a small table, and a golden key lay on top of it.

アリスがその鍵かぎを使つかってみると、とても小ちいさなドアを一ひとつ開あけることができました。

When Alice tried the key, she was able to open one very small door.

ドアの向むこうには、美うつくしい庭にわが見みえます。

Beyond the door, she could see a beautiful garden.

色いろとりどりの花はなが咲さき、とても明あかるくて楽たのしそうな場所ばしょでした。

Colorful flowers were blooming there, and it looked like a bright and cheerful place.

アリスはすぐにでも庭にわへ行いきたいと思おもいました。

Alice wanted to enter the garden immediately.

しかし、ドアはとても小ちいさく、今いまの体からだでは通とうることができません。

But the door was very small, and her body was too large to pass through it.

あきらめずに部屋へやを見回みまわしていると、テーブルの上うえに小ちいさな瓶びんが置おいてあることに気きづきました。

As she looked around the room without giving up, she noticed a small bottle on the table.

アリスは少すこし迷まよいましたが、中なかに入はいっていた飲のみ物ものを飲のんでみました。

Alice hesitated a little, but tried drinking what was inside.

すると、体からだがどんどん小ちいさくなっていきました。

Then her body began growing smaller and smaller.

これなら小ちいさなドアを通とうることができます。

Now she could pass through the tiny door.

しかし、アリスは大切たいせつなことを忘わすれていました。

But Alice had forgotten something important.

金色きんいろの鍵かぎを、テーブルの上うえに置おいたままだったのです。

She had left the golden key on top of the table.

小ちいさくなったアリスには、もうテーブルの上うえまで手てが届とどきません。

Now that she was small, Alice could no longer reach the top of the table.

どうしようかと困こまっていると、今度こんどは小ちいさなケーキを見みつけました。

As she wondered what to do, she found a small cake.

アリスがそのケーキを食たべてみると、今度こんどは体からだがどんどん大おおきくなっていきました。

When Alice tried eating the cake, this time her body began growing larger and larger.

気きがつくと、頭あたまが天井てんじょうに届とどきそうなほど大おおきくなっています。

Before she knew it, she had grown so large that her head nearly touched the ceiling.

小ちいさくなりすぎたと思おもったら、今度こんどは大おおきくなりすぎてしまいました。

Just when she thought she had become too small, she had now become too large.

朝あさから何なん度ども体からだの大おおきさが変かわるので、アリスはだんだん、自分じぶん自身じしんまで変かわってしまったような気きがしてきました。

Her size had changed so many times since morning that Alice began to feel as if even her identity had changed.

大おおきくなったアリスは、とても困こまってしまいました。

The now enormous Alice was in serious trouble.

美うつくしい庭にわへ行いきたいだけなのに、何なにをしてもうまくいきません。

All she wanted was to enter the beautiful garden, yet nothing she tried worked.

悲かなしくなったアリスは、ついに泣なき始はじめました。

Alice became sad and finally began to cry.

大おおきな体からだからたくさんの涙なみだが流ながれ、床ゆかには池いけのように水みずがたまっていきます。床

Tears poured from her large body until water collected across the floor like a pond.

しばらくすると、白しろウサギがまた近ちかくを通とうりました。

After a while, the White Rabbit passed nearby again.

白しろウサギはきれいな服ふくを着きて、手袋てぶくろと扇子せんすを持もちながら急いそいでいました。

He was dressed in fine clothes and hurried along carrying gloves and a folding fan.

ところが、大おおきなアリスを見みると驚おどろき、持もっていたものを落おとして逃にげてしまいます。

But when he saw the enormous Alice, he dropped what he was carrying and ran away in surprise.

アリスは、白しろウサギが落おとした扇子せんすを手てに取とりました。

Alice picked up the fan the White Rabbit had dropped.

すると、また少すこしずつ体からだが小ちいさくなっていきます。

Then her body gradually began to shrink again.

やがて小ちいさくなったアリスは、自分じぶんが流ながした涙なみだの池いけの中なかに落おちてしまいました。

Eventually, the tiny Alice fell into the pool made from her own tears.

池いけの中なかは、アリスだけではありませんでした。

Alice was not alone in the pool.

ネズミや鳥とりなど、いろいろな動物どうぶつたちも泳およいでいます。

Mice, birds, and many other animals were swimming there too.

みんなでなんとか岸きしへ上あがりましたが、体からだはびしょぬれでした。岸

They somehow reached the shore together, but they were all soaking wet.

そこで、どうすれば体からだを乾かわかすことができるのか、みんなで話はなし合あうことになりました。

They began discussing how they could dry themselves.

一いち羽わのドードー鳥どりが、みんなで競走きょうそうをすればいいと言いいました。

One Dodo bird suggested that everyone should have a race.

しかし、その競走きょうそうにはスタートする場所ばしょも、ゴールする場所ばしょもありません。

However, the race had neither a starting point nor a finish line.

みんな好すきなところから走はしり始はじめ、好すきな方向ほうこうへ走はしっていきました。

Everyone began wherever they liked and ran in whatever direction they pleased.

アリスもよく分わからないまま、ほかの動物どうぶつたちと一緒いっしょに走はしりました。

Alice ran with the other animals without really understanding what was happening.

しばらくすると、ドードー鳥どりが突然とつぜん、競走きょうそうは終おわりだと言いいました。

After a while, the Dodo suddenly announced that the race was over.

みんなが「誰だれが勝かったのですか」と聞きくと、ドードー鳥どりは少すこし考かんがえました。勝つ

When everyone asked, "Who won?" the Dodo thought for a moment.

そして、「みんなが勝かちました。だから、みんなが賞品しょうひんをもらいます」と答こたえました。

Then he answered, "Everyone won, so everyone gets a prize."

アリスには意味いみがよく分わかりませんでしたが、この世界せかいではこういうことが普通ふつうなのかもしれないと思おもうようになってきました。

Alice did not really understand, but she was beginning to think that perhaps this kind of thing was normal in this world.

その後ご、アリスはネズミと話はなしました。

Afterward, Alice spoke with a mouse.

しかし、アリスが家いえで飼かっている猫ねこの話はなしをすると、ネズミは怒おこってしまいました。飼う

But when she talked about the cat she kept at home, the mouse became angry.

猫ねこはネズミにとって、とても怖こわい動物どうぶつだからです。

That was because cats were very frightening animals to mice.

アリスは悪わるいことを言いうつもりはなかったのですが、ほかの動物どうぶつたちもだんだん離はなれていきました。

Alice had not meant to say anything hurtful, but the other animals gradually moved away too.

しばらくすると、アリスはまた一人ひとりになってしまいました。

Before long, Alice was alone again.

しばらく歩あるいていると、白しろウサギがまた現あらわれました。

After walking for a while, Alice saw the White Rabbit again.

しかし白しろウサギはアリスを見みても、アリスだとは気きづきませんでした。

But even when he looked at Alice, the White Rabbit did not realize who she was.

自分じぶんの家いえで働はたらいている人ひとだと思おもい込こみ、家いえへ行いって手袋てぶくろと扇子せんすを持もってくるように命令めいれいしました。

He assumed she was someone who worked in his house and ordered her to fetch his gloves and fan.

アリスは少すこし驚おどろきましたが、白しろウサギの家いえへ行いってみることにしました。

Alice was surprised, but decided to go to the White Rabbit's house.

家いえの中なかを探さがしていると、また小ちいさな瓶びんを見みつけました。

While searching inside, she found another small bottle.

アリスは、飲のんだらどうなるのか気きになり、少すこしだけ飲のんでみました。

Curious about what would happen, Alice drank just a little.

すると、また体からだが大おおきくなり始はじめます。

Then her body began growing again.

今度こんどは家いえの中なかで大おおきくなってしまいました。

This time, she became enormous inside the house.

腕うでは窓まどから外そとへ出でて、足あしは部屋へやの中なかでほとんど動うごかせません。

Her arms stuck out through the windows, while her legs could barely move inside the room.

外そとでは白しろウサギたちが大騒おうさわぎしています。

Outside, the White Rabbit and the others were in an uproar.

なんとかアリスを家いえの外そとへ出だそうとしますが、まったくうまくいきません。

They tried everything they could to get Alice out of the house, but nothing worked.

最後さいごには、小ちいさな石いしのようなものを家いえの中なかへ投なげ始はじめました。

Finally, they began throwing small stone-like objects into the house.

ところが、その石いしは床ゆかに落おちると小ちいさなケーキに変かわりました。

But when the stones landed on the floor, they turned into little cakes.

アリスは、それを食たべればまた体からだの大おおきさが変かわるかもしれないと考かんがえました。

Alice thought that eating them might change her size again.

食たべてみると、予想よそうした通とうり、体からだが少すこしずつ小ちいさくなっていきます。

When she tried one, her body became smaller just as she had expected.

動うごける大おおきさになると、アリスは急いそいで家いえから逃にげました。

As soon as she was small enough to move, Alice hurried out of the house.

森もりの中なかへ入はいると、とても大おおきなキノコを見みつけました。

Entering the forest, she found an enormous mushroom.

そのキノコの上うえには、一いっ匹ぴきの青あおいイモムシが座すわっています。

A large blue caterpillar was sitting on top of it.

イモムシは静しずかにアリスを見みてから、「あなたは誰だれですか」と聞ききました。

The Caterpillar looked quietly at Alice and then asked, "Who are you?"

アリスは、すぐに答こたえることができませんでした。

Alice could not answer right away.

朝あさから何なん度ども体からだの大おおきさが変かわっているため、自分じぶん自身じしんまで変かわってしまったような気きがしていたからです。

Her body had changed size so many times since morning that she felt as if she herself had changed too.

アリスは、「今いまはよく分わかりません。朝あさ起おきたときには分わかっていたんですが」と答こたえました。

Alice replied, "I'm not really sure now. I knew who I was when I woke up this morning."

しかし、イモムシは特とくに驚おどろきません。

But the Caterpillar was not especially surprised.

アリスにとっては大おおきな問題もんだいでも、この世界せかいではそれほど不思議ふしぎなことではないようです。

What seemed like a serious problem to Alice apparently was not so unusual in this world.

二人ふたりはしばらく話はなしたあと、イモムシはキノコを使つかえば体からだの大おおきさを変かえられることを教おしえました。

After they talked for a while, the Caterpillar told Alice that the mushroom could change her size.

キノコの片方かたほうを食たべれば大おおきくなり、もう片方かたほうを食たべれば小ちいさくなります。

Eating from one side would make her larger, while eating from the other would make her smaller.

ただし、どちらがどちらなのかは、自分じぶんで確たしかめなければなりません。

However, Alice had to discover for herself which side did which.

アリスはキノコを少すこしずつ食たべながら、自分じぶんの体からだをちょうどいい大おおきさにしようとしました。

Alice ate small pieces of the mushroom, trying to make her body just the right size.

何なん度どか失敗しっぱいしましたが、ようやく普通ふつうに歩あるけるくらいの大おおきさになりました。

After several failed attempts, she finally became a normal size for walking.

森もりを歩あるいていると、アリスは一いっ軒けんの家いえを見みつけました。

Walking through the forest, Alice found a house.

家いえの中なかには、公爵こうしゃく夫人ふじんと赤あかちゃん、そして料理りょうりをしている人ひとがいました。

Inside were the Duchess, a baby, and a cook.

しかし、その部屋へやはとても変へんでした。

But the room was very strange.

料理りょうりにはたくさんのコショウが入はいっているため、みんな何なん度どもくしゃみをしています。

There was so much pepper in the food that everyone kept sneezing.

さらに、料理りょうりをしている人ひとは皿さらや鍋なべを投なげていました。

The cook was also throwing plates and pots around.

赤あかちゃんも大おおきな声こえで泣ないています。

The baby was crying loudly as well.

アリスは、こんな場所ばしょに赤あかちゃんを置おいておくのは危あぶないと思おもいました。

Alice thought it was dangerous to leave a baby in a place like this.

そこで赤あかちゃんを抱だき、家いえの外そとへ出でました。抱く

So she picked up the baby and went outside.

しかし、森もりの中なかを歩あるいているうちに、赤あかちゃんの様子ようすがおかしくなってきます。

But as she walked through the forest, something strange began happening to the baby.

顔かおを見みると、人間にんげんの赤あかちゃんというより、だんだんブタのようになっていました。

When she looked at its face, it seemed to be turning into a pig rather than remaining a human baby.

そして最後さいごには本当ほんとうに小ちいさなブタになり、アリスの腕うでから離はなれて森もりの中なかへ走はしっていきました。

At last it became a real little pig, left Alice's arms, and ran into the forest.

アリスは驚おどろきましたが、この世界せかいでは、もう何なにが起おきてもおかしくないと思おもい始はじめていました。
