Many people have probably seen his black hat, small mustache, and oversized shoes.

彼かれの映画えいがには、あまり言葉ことばがありません。

There is not much dialogue in his films.

でも、顔かおや体からだの動うごきで、世界中せかいじゅうの人ひとを笑わらわせました。

But he made people around the world laugh through his facial expressions and body movements.

しかし、子こどものころの生活せいかつは、とても大変たいへんでした。

However, his childhood was extremely difficult.

お金かねがない生活せいかつをしながら、少すこしずつ舞台ぶたいの仕事しごとを始はじめました。

While living in poverty, he gradually began working on the stage.

そして、イギリスからアメリカへ行いき、世界せかいで有名ゆうめいなスターになります。

Then he traveled from Britain to the United States and became a world-famous star.

1889年ねん、イギリスのロンドンで生うまれました。

He was born in London, England, in 1889.

父ちちも母ははも、歌うたや舞台ぶたいの仕事しごとをしていました。

Both his father and mother worked as singers and stage performers.

しかし、家いえにはあまりお金かねがありませんでした。

However, the family had very little money.

父ちちと一緒いっしょに生活せいかつすることも少すくなく、母ははも病気びょうきになりました。

He rarely lived with his father, and his mother became ill.

チャップリンと兄あには、子こどものころから大変たいへんな生活せいかつをしました。

Chaplin and his brother had a very difficult childhood.

But he loved singing and dancing.

そして、小ちいさいころから舞台ぶたいに立たつようになります。

He began appearing on stage when he was still young.

10歳さいになる前まえには、子こどもたちのグループに入はいり、踊おどる仕事しごとをしていました。

Before he turned ten, he joined a children's group and worked as a dancer.

He did not have much time to study at school.

Later, a film company offered him a job.

当時とうじ、映画えいがはまだ新あたらしいものでした。

At that time, film was still a new medium.

テレビもありません。

There was no television.

映画えいが館かんへ行いって、大おおきな画面がめんで映画えいがを見みる時代じだいです。

It was an age when people went to theaters to watch films on a large screen.

彼かれはアメリカに残のこり、映画えいがに出でることにしました。

He decided to remain in the United States and appear in films.

From that point, his life changed dramatically.

In 1914, Chaplin created a new costume for a film.

A small mustache.

Oversized trousers.

Oversized shoes.

And a walking cane.

When he appeared in this outfit, many people laughed.

Even the way he walked was a little strange.

He also failed again and again.

He did more than appear as an actor.

He also developed stories and worked on producing films.

In 1921, he made a film called The Kid.

It contains many funny scenes.

Even after sound was introduced to film, he continued to value physical movement for many years.

In 1936, he made a film called Modern Times.

In this film, he humorously portrayed the lives of people working in a factory.

But it also explored problems involving work and money.

1940年ねんには、The Great Dictatorという映画えいがを作つくります。

In 1940, he made a film called The Great Dictator.

この映画えいがでは、戦争せんそうや強つよい力ちからを持もつ人ひとについて、自分じぶんの考かんがえを伝つたえました。

In this film, he shared his views about war and people who held great power.

Chaplin's films were not made only for laughter.

In 1952, Chaplin left the United States.

After that, he lived in Switzerland with his family.

長ながい間あいだアメリカに戻もどりませんでしたが、1972年ねんに再ふたたびアメリカへ行いきました。

He did not return to the United States for many years, but he went back in 1972.

そして、映画えいがの世界せかいへの大おおきな働はたらきが評価ひょうかされ、アカデミー賞しょうの名誉めいよ賞しょうを受うけました。

His great contribution to cinema was recognized, and he received an Honorary Academy Award.

若わかいころ、お金かねがなく、大変たいへんな生活せいかつをしていた少年しょうねん。

He had once been a boy living a difficult life without money.

その少年しょうねんは、長ながい時間じかんをかけて、世界中せかいじゅうで知しられる映画えいがスターになりました。

Over many years, that boy became a film star known around the world.

He died in Switzerland in 1977.
