In this video, we will talk about LEGO.
LEGO is one of the most famous toys in the world.
By combining small bricks, you can build all kinds of things, including houses, cars, towns, and spaceships.
Many people have probably played with LEGO as children.
LEGO is now known around the world, but it did not make plastic bricks from the beginning.
LEGO began as a woodworking shop in a small town in Denmark.
The history of LEGO began when a carpenter there started making small toys out of wood.
Later, the company moved from wooden toys to plastic ones and created a new shape that led to the LEGO bricks we know today.
The company grew and became known to children around the world.
However, its long history also included serious problems.
In the 2000s, LEGO went through a period so difficult that the company itself was in danger of disappearing.
Even so, LEGO reconsidered what had always mattered most to it and began growing again.
Let us look at how LEGO grew from a small woodworking shop into a global toy company.
Chapter 1
The story of LEGO begins in the small Danish town of Billund.
Its founder was a carpenter named Ole Kirk Christiansen.
Ole made houses, furniture, and other wooden items.
However, when the global economy worsened in the 1930s, work became increasingly scarce.
The farmers who had been his customers also found it difficult to spend money.
Ole gradually had less and less work.
So he began thinking about making something different from what he had made before.
Around 1932, he started making toys out of wood.
They were small toys for children, such as cars and airplanes.
This new line of work began during an extremely difficult period for the company.
However, Ole placed great importance on quality even when making toys.
Instead of making things quickly and selling as many as possible, he tried to make the best products he could.
That way of thinking remained part of LEGO in the years that followed.
In the 1930s, Ole gave his company a new name.
That name was “LEGO.”
They mean “play well.”
Today, LEGO is a short name known around the world, but it began with the simple idea of playing well.
At this time, LEGO was not yet the brick company we know today.
It was a small company that made wooden toys.
Chapter 2
In the 1940s, new materials gradually began to be used.
One of them was plastic.
Today, it is normal for toys to be made of plastic.
At the time, however, it was still a new material.
Ole became interested in this new material.
He brought a machine for making plastic toys into the company.
In 1949, LEGO began selling small plastic bricks.
The bricks had round studs on top, allowing one brick to be connected to another.
They looked somewhat like the LEGO bricks of today.
However, there was still a major problem.
The bricks of that time sometimes came apart easily after being assembled.
Even if a child built a large house or car, it would quickly fall apart.
This made it difficult to play freely.
So Ole's son Godtfred and the others considered how they could make the bricks connect securely.
The bricks needed to hold together firmly.
But if they held together too tightly, children would not be able to separate them.
They needed a shape that was easy to connect and also easy to take apart when necessary.
They searched for a new method, thinking repeatedly and changing the shape along the way.
Through this research, an important idea emerged that led to the LEGO brick we know today.
Chapter 3
In 1958, something very important happened for LEGO.
The new design that led to today's LEGO brick was completed.
The key was the small tube-like parts underneath the brick.
When the round studs on top fit properly with the parts underneath, the bricks connect securely.
Even so, they can still be separated by hand when necessary.
This simple design allowed children to build all kinds of things freely.
Depending on how the same bricks are combined, they can become a house.
You can also build a car or create something completely new from your own imagination.
Instead of simply playing with a finished toy, the play begins with building it yourself.
LEGO valued not only each individual product, but also the ability to use many different bricks together.
Even after buying a new set, children could use it together with the bricks they already owned.
This idea became one of LEGO's defining features.
In 1960, a fire broke out in the place where the wooden toys were stored.
Afterward, LEGO stopped producing wooden toys and began focusing on plastic LEGO bricks.
The company that had started with wooden toys now truly began transforming into a brick company.
Chapter 4
As LEGO bricks became popular, the company began creating one new way to play after another.
Children could build not only houses, but also cars, trains, towns, and much more.
Using the bricks, children could create worlds of their own.
More and more people also wanted to see large creations made from LEGO.
Many people came to see the company, and large numbers began visiting Billund to view completed LEGO models.
So LEGO decided to create a place that even more people could enjoy.
In 1968, the first LEGOLAND opened in Billund, Denmark.
Visitors could see towns and buildings made from enormous numbers of LEGO bricks.
Many people came during its first year, and it became extremely popular.
LEGO expanded beyond a toy played with at home into a place people could actually visit and enjoy.
Then, in 1978, the LEGO minifigure that remains familiar today was introduced.
It was a small figure shaped like a person.
Its arms and legs could move, and its face had a simple expression.
The addition of these small people expanded the possibilities of LEGO play even further.
Children could not only build a house, but also place people inside it.
After building a town, they could use police officers, firefighters, and other figures to create stories.
LEGO expanded from a way to build things into a way to imagine stories of your own.
Chapter 5
For many years, LEGO created its own series based on towns, space, castles, and other themes.
However, near the end of the 1990s, it began a major new challenge.
The company started creating products together with movies and other works that were already famous around the world.
In 1999, LEGO Star Wars was introduced.
People could now build spaceships and characters from the movies with their own hands using LEGO.
This was a new kind of enjoyment, somewhat different from LEGO products of the past.
Not only LEGO fans, but Star Wars fans also became interested in the products.
After that, LEGO continued creating products with many other famous franchises.
LEGO also expanded into new areas, including computer games.
Times were changing, and the ways children played were changing as well.
Video games, computers, and many other forms of entertainment besides bricks had appeared.
LEGO was also trying to change with the times.
However, as it began many new ventures, serious problems gradually developed within the company.
Chapter 6
In the early 2000s, LEGO entered an extremely difficult period.
Although it had long created toys popular around the world, the company began losing a great deal of money.
There was no single reason for this.
The way children played was changing, and video games were becoming increasingly popular.
LEGO itself had also begun many new products and business ventures.
However, the product range grew too large, and producing everything required a great deal of money.
It also became unclear what the company valued most.
Around 2003 and 2004, LEGO suffered enormous losses.
The problem was so serious that LEGO had to consider whether the company could continue at all.
In 2004, the company therefore decided to make major changes.
Under a new leader, it first reorganized its operations.
Instead of trying to make everything, LEGO decided to focus once again on what it truly did best.
At the center of that effort were, of course, LEGO bricks.
It was the kind of play the company had valued throughout its long history: freely building by combining bricks.
The company streamlined its products, reduced costs, and focused once again on products that felt distinctly like LEGO.
It also began paying close attention to what customers liked and what kinds of LEGO products they wanted to play with.
While continuing to try new things, the company made sure not to forget what mattered most.
Chapter 7
As the company continued these reforms, LEGO gradually regained its strength.
What mattered was not returning to exactly the same company it had been in the past.
While valuing the basic LEGO brick, it also continued adopting new ideas.
Star Wars
Products connected with popular franchises such as Star Wars continued as well.
The company offered more large and challenging sets that adults, not only children, could enjoy.
The LEGO name also appeared more often beyond bricks, in games, movies, and other areas.
Yet LEGO bricks assembled by hand always remained at the center.
One special feature of LEGO is that old and new bricks can be used together.
Even basic bricks made decades ago can be combined with bricks made today.
While creating new products, LEGO has preserved its fundamental design for many years.
LEGO once again grew into one of the world's leading toy companies.
It had experienced a major crisis, but reconsidering the question “What kind of company are we?” helped bring about its recovery.
Chapter 8
The history of LEGO began in 1932.
Its first products were wooden toys.
Later, the company adopted the new material of plastic, and in 1958 the design that led to today's LEGO brick was created.
A great deal of time has passed since then, but the basic idea has not changed very much.
There is not just one fixed way to play with LEGO.
You can follow the instructions and build the model shown.
After finishing it, you can take everything apart and build something different.
You can also decide for yourself what you want to create.
Even when people use the same bricks, each person can produce something different.
That is one of the things that makes LEGO so interesting.
While adopting new characters and technologies to suit each era, LEGO has also preserved the basic act of assembling bricks.
Creating something new while protecting what has long been important.
LEGO can be described as a company that has continued doing both.
The company that began when a carpenter made wooden toys in a small Danish town became a brand known around the world over many years.
