Introduction
幸福な王子
ある町の高い場所に、「幸福な王子」と呼ばれる美しい像が立っていました。
High above a town stood a beautiful statue known as the Happy Prince.
王子の体は金色に輝き、目には青い宝石、剣には赤い宝石がついていました。
The Prince's body shone with gold, with blue jewels for eyes and a red jewel on his sword.
町の人たちは、その像を見て「とても美しい」と言いました。
The people of the town looked at the statue and said, "It is very beautiful."
しかし、王子は幸せではありませんでした。
However, the Prince was not happy.
高い場所から町を見ると、貧しくて困っている人や、病気で苦しんでいる人がたくさん見えたからです。
From his high position, he could see many poor people in need and many sick people who were suffering.
そんな王子のところへ、一羽の小さなツバメがやってきます。
Then one little swallow came to the Prince.
ツバメは暖かいエジプトへ行くでした。
The swallow was on his way to warm Egypt.
ところが、王子と出会ったことで、その旅は大きく変わっていきます。
But meeting the Prince would completely change his journey.
王子は自分が持っている宝石や金を、困っている人たちにあげようとします。
The Prince wanted to give his jewels and gold to people in need.
そしてツバメは、そのをかなえるため、町の中を何度も飛びました。
To fulfill his wish, the swallow flew through the town again and again.
二人は少しずつ大切なものを失っていきます。
Little by little, the two of them lost the things that were precious to them.
それでも、困っている人を助けることをやめませんでした。
Even so, they never stopped helping people in need.
今回は、そんな幸福な王子と小さなツバメの物語を見ていきましょう。
Let us now look at the story of the Happy Prince and the little swallow.
Chapter 1
町の上に立つ美しい王子
ある町の真ん中に、とても高い柱がありました。
In the center of a town stood a very tall column.
その一番上には、王子の像が立っていました。
At the very top stood a statue of a prince.
王子の体には薄い金が使われていて、太陽の光を受けると美しく輝きました。
The Prince's body was covered with thin sheets of gold, which shone beautifully in the sunlight.
両方の目には青いサファイアが入っていて、持っている剣には大きな赤いルビーがついていました。
His two eyes were blue sapphires, and a large red ruby decorated the sword he held.
町の人たちは、この像を「幸福な王子」と呼んでいました。
The people of the town called this statue the Happy Prince.
みんな、王子はとても幸せそうに見えると思っていました。
Everyone thought the Prince looked very happy.
泣いている子どもを見た母親が、「幸福な王子を見てごらん。王子は泣いたりしないでしょう」と言うこともありました。
When a child cried, a mother would sometimes say, "Look at the Happy Prince. He never cries, does he?"
悲しい気持ちの人が王子を見て、「この世界には幸せな人もいるんだ」と考えることもありました。
Sometimes a sad person would look at the Prince and think, "There are happy people in this world."
しかし、本当の王子の気持ちは、町の人たちには分かりませんでした。
However, the people of the town did not know how the Prince truly felt.
王子は昔、本当にとして生きていました。
Long ago, the Prince had lived as a human being.
そのころは大きなで暮らしていました。
At that time, he lived in a great palace.
宮殿には美しい庭があり、毎日楽しく遊ぶことができました。
The palace had a beautiful garden where he could play happily every day.
夜になると、大きな部屋で音楽を聞いたり、踊ったりしました。
At night, he listened to music and danced in a large room.
王子の周りには楽しいものがたくさんありました。
The Prince was surrounded by many enjoyable things.
宮殿の周りには高い壁がありましたが、王子はその外に何があるのか考えませんでした。
High walls surrounded the palace, but the Prince never wondered what lay beyond them.
自分の世界が美しく、楽しかったからです。
That was because his own world was beautiful and joyful.
そのため、人々は彼を「幸福な王子」と呼びました。
For this reason, people called him the Happy Prince.
王子自身も、自分は幸せだと思っていました。
The Prince himself also believed that he was happy.
しかし、人間としてのが終わったあと、王子の像は町の高い場所に立てられました。
But after his life as a human ended, a statue of the Prince was placed high above the town.
すると、今まで見えなかったものが見えるようになりました。
Then he began to see things he had never seen before.
高い場所からは、町の隅まで見ることができました。
From high above, he could see every corner of the town.
美しい家だけではありません。
He did not see only beautiful houses.
お金がなくて困っている人も見えました。
He also saw people in trouble because they had no money.
食べ物がない子どももいました。
He saw children with no food.
寒い部屋で生活している人もいました。
He saw people living in cold rooms.
王子は初めて、自分が暮らしていた町に多くの悲しみがあることを知ったのです。
For the first time, the Prince learned that there was much sadness in the town where he had lived.
像になった王子の心は鉛でできていました。
The heart of the Prince's statue was made of lead.
しかし、人々の苦しい生活を見ていると、涙が出てきました。
But when he saw the people's difficult lives, tears came to his eyes.
金色に美しい顔を、静かに涙が流れていました。
Tears quietly ran down his beautiful golden face.
Chapter 2
エジプトへ行きたいツバメ
は秋になり、寒い冬が近づいていました。
It was autumn, and the cold winter was approaching.
たくさんのツバメたちは、暖かいエジプトへ向かって飛んでいきました。
Many swallows flew toward warm Egypt.
しかし、一羽の小さなツバメだけは、みんなと一緒に出発しませんでした。
But one little swallow did not leave with the others.
川の近くに生えていた一本の美しい草を好きになり、しばらくそこに残っていたからです。
He had fallen in love with a beautiful reed growing near the river and had stayed there for a while.
やがて秋が深くなると、ツバメもエジプトへ行くことにしました。
As autumn deepened, the swallow finally decided to go to Egypt.
一日中飛び続け、夜になったころ、幸福な王子がいる町に着きました。
He flew all day and arrived at the town of the Happy Prince around nightfall.
「今日はどこで寝ようかな」
"Where should I sleep tonight?"
ツバメが町を見ていると、高い柱の上に金色の王子が見えました。
As the swallow looked over the town, he saw the golden Prince on top of a tall column.
「ここならいい場所だ。空気もきれいだし、景色もいい」
"This looks like a good place. The air is clean, and the view is nice."
ツバメは王子の足元で眠ることにしました。
The swallow decided to sleep at the Prince's feet.
「金色の部屋みたいだ」
"It is like a golden bedroom."
ツバメはうれしくなり、羽の中に顔を入れて眠ろうとしました。
Feeling pleased, the swallow tucked his head under his wing and tried to sleep.
ところが、そのとき冷たい水が、ツバメの体に落ちました。
But just then, one cold drop of water fell onto his body.
ツバメは空を見ました。
The swallow looked up at the sky.
雲はありません。
There were no clouds.
星もきれいに見えています。
The stars were clearly visible as well.
「雨じゃないのに、おかしいな」
"That is strange. It is not raining."
もう一度眠ろうとすると、また水が落ちてきました。
When he tried to sleep again, another drop of water fell.
そしての水が落ちてきたとき、ツバメは上を見ました。
When a third drop fell, the swallow looked up.
すると、幸福な王子が泣いていました。
The Happy Prince was crying.
青い目から涙が出て、金色の顔を流れていたのです。
Tears were flowing from his blue eyes and down his golden face.
ツバメは驚いて聞きました。
Surprised, the swallow asked him a question.
「あなたは誰ですか」
"Who are you?"
王子は答えました。
The Prince answered.
「私は幸福な王子です」
"I am the Happy Prince."
ツバメはに思いました。
The swallow found this strange.
幸福な王子なのに、どうして泣いているのでしょう。
If he was the Happy Prince, why was he crying?
王子は、自分が人間だったころの話をしました。
The Prince told the swallow about the time when he had been human.
宮殿の中では、悲しいものを見ることがありませんでした。
Inside the palace, he had never seen anything sad.
しかし今は、町の中でんでいる人がたくさん見えます。
But now he could see many people suffering throughout the town.
王子は言いました。
The Prince said,
「私はここから動くことができません。でも、困っている人を助けたいのです」
"I cannot move from here, but I want to help the people in need."
ツバメはその話を聞きましたが、エジプトへ行かなければならないと思っていました。
The swallow listened, but he believed that he had to go to Egypt.
暖かいエジプトでは、仲間たちが待っています。
His companions were waiting for him in warm Egypt.
寒い町に長くいるつもりはありませんでした。
He had not intended to stay long in the cold town.
しかし、王子はツバメに一つお願いをしました。
However, the Prince asked the swallow for one favor.
Chapter 3
最初の宝石
王子には、遠くにある小さな家が見えていました。
The Prince could see a small house in the distance.
その家の中では、一人の女性が仕事をしていました。
Inside the house, a woman was working.
女性は服を作る仕事をしていました。
She made clothes for a living.
の女性がパーティーで着る、美しい服を作っていたのです。
She was making a beautiful dress for a wealthy woman to wear to a party.
しかし、自分の生活はとても貧しいものでした。
However, her own life was very poor.
女性の手には、針でできた小さな傷がたくさんありました。
Her hands were covered with small wounds from her needle.
部屋の隅には、小さな男の子が寝ていました。
A little boy lay in the corner of the room.
男の子は病気で、がありました。
The boy was sick and had a high fever.
「オレンジが食べたい」
"I want an orange."
男の子は母親に言いました。
The boy said this to his mother.
しかし、家にはオレンジを買うお金がありません。
But there was no money in the house to buy an orange.
母親が男の子にあげられるのは、水だけでした。
All his mother could give him was water.
男の子は苦しそうに泣いていました。
The boy cried in pain.
その様子を高い場所から見ていた王子は、ツバメに言いました。
Watching from high above, the Prince spoke to the swallow.
「私の剣についている赤いルビーを取って、あの女性に届けてください」
"Take the red ruby from my sword and deliver it to that woman."
ツバメは困りました。
The swallow did not know what to do.
「でも、私はエジプトへ行かなければなりません。仲間たちが待っています」
"But I must go to Egypt. My companions are waiting for me."
王子はもう一度お願いしました。
The Prince asked him once more.
「だけ、ここにいてくれませんか。あの子どもは病気で、お母さんもとても悲しんでいます」
"Could you stay here for just one night? That child is sick, and his mother is very sad."
ツバメは王子の悲しそうな顔を見ました。
The swallow looked at the Prince's sorrowful face.
外は寒くなっていました。
It was growing cold outside.
それでもツバメは、一晩だけ王子を手伝うことにしました。
Even so, the swallow decided to help the Prince for one night.
ツバメは王子の剣から赤いルビーを取りました。
The swallow removed the red ruby from the Prince's sword.
そして、その宝石を口にくわえて、夜の町を飛びました。
Holding the jewel in his beak, he flew through the town at night.
大きなの近くでは、お金持ちの人たちが楽しそうに話していました。
Near the large buildings, wealthy people were talking happily.
明るい部屋から音楽も聞こえてきます。
Music could also be heard from the brightly lit rooms.
しかしツバメはそこを、貧しい親子が住む小さな家へ向かいました。
But the swallow flew past them and headed toward the small house where the poor mother and child lived.
家に着くと、母親は疲れて眠っていました。
When he arrived, the exhausted mother was asleep.
ツバメは、テーブルの上に赤いルビーを置きました。
The swallow placed the red ruby on the table.
それから病気の男の子の近くを飛び、羽でやさしく風を送りました。
Then he flew near the sick boy and gently fanned him with his wings.
男の子は少し涼しくなり、安心したように眠りました。
The boy felt a little cooler and fell asleep peacefully.
仕事が終わると、ツバメは王子のところへ戻りました。
When his work was done, the swallow returned to the Prince.
外はとても寒いなのに、不思議なことにツバメの心は少し暖かく感じました。
Although it should have felt very cold outside, the swallow strangely felt a little warmth in his heart.
王子は言いました。
The Prince said,
「誰かのために良いことをしたからですよ」
"That is because you did something good for someone else."
次の日、ツバメは考えました。
The next day, the swallow thought,
「今夜こそエジプトへ行こう」
"Tonight I will finally go to Egypt."
しかし、その夜も王子はツバメにお願いをしました。
But that night, the Prince asked the swallow for another favor.
Chapter 4
一つ目の青い目
町の遠くに、若い男が住んでいました。
A young man lived in a distant part of the town.
小さくて寒い部屋で、一人で机に向かっていました。
He sat alone at a desk in a small, cold room.
その男は、劇の物語を書いていました。
The man was writing a play.
完成させれば、で使ってもらえるかもしれません。
If he finished it, a theater might agree to use it.
しかし、部屋には暖かい火がありませんでした。
But there was no fire to warm the room.
食べ物を買うお金もありません。
He had no money to buy food either.
寒さとのため、男はもう文章を書くことができなくなっていました。
Because of the cold and hunger, the man could no longer write.
王子はその様子を見て、ツバメに言いました。
Seeing him, the Prince spoke to the swallow.
「あの若い人を助けてください」
"Please help that young man."
ツバメは答えました。
The swallow answered,
「昨日のルビーはもうありません」
"Yesterday's ruby is already gone."
すると王子は言いました。
Then the Prince said,
「私の目を一つ取って、彼に届けてください」
"Take one of my eyes and deliver it to him."
王子の目には、美しい青いが使われていました。
The Prince's eyes were made of beautiful blue sapphires.
ツバメは驚きました。
The swallow was shocked.
「そんなことはできません。目がなくなったら、あなたは困ります」
"I cannot do that. You will be in trouble if you lose an eye."
しかし王子は、自分の目よりも、苦しんでいるを助けることを選びました。
But the Prince chose to help the suffering young man rather than keep his own eye.
ツバメは悲しくなりましたが、王子の願いを聞くことにしました。
The swallow was sad, but he decided to follow the Prince's wish.
青い宝石を一つ取り、若い男がいる部屋へ飛びました。
He removed one blue jewel and flew to the young man's room.
屋根には小さな穴がありました。
There was a small hole in the roof.
ツバメはそこから部屋に入り、机の近くにサファイアを置きました。
The swallow entered through it and placed the sapphire near the desk.
しばらくして若い男が顔を上げると、美しい宝石がありました。
After a while, the young man raised his head and saw the beautiful jewel.
「誰かが私を助けてくれたんだ」
"Someone has helped me."
男はうれしくなりました。
The man became very happy.
この宝石を売れば、食べ物や部屋を暖かくするための物を買うことができます。
By selling the jewel, he could buy food and something to heat his room.
そして、劇の続きを書くこともできます。
He could also continue writing his play.
ツバメはまた王子のところへ戻りました。
The swallow returned to the Prince again.
王子の目は一つになっていました。
The Prince now had only one eye.
それでも王子はしていませんでした。
Even so, the Prince had no regrets.
次の日、ツバメは港へ行きました。
The next day, the swallow went to the harbor.
船を見ながら、エジプトのことを考えました。
As he watched the ships, he thought about Egypt.
暖かい国では仲間たちが楽しく暮らしているでしょう。
His companions were probably living happily in the warm country.
「今日は本当に出発しよう」
"Today I really will leave."
夜になると、ツバメは王子のところへ最後のあいさつに行きました。
When night came, the swallow went to say a final goodbye to the Prince.
ところが、王子にはもう一つお願いがありました。
But the Prince had one more favor to ask.
Chapter 5
最後の青い目
には、一人の小さな女の子がいました。
There was a little girl in the town square.
女の子はマッチを売っていました。
The girl was selling matches.
しかし、持っていたマッチを水の中に落としてしまいました。
But she had dropped her matches into the water.
もう売ることができません。
She could no longer sell them.
お金を持って帰ることもできません。
She could not take any money home either.
女の子は靴もはいていませんでした。
The girl was not even wearing shoes.
寒い夜の中で、一人で泣いていました。
She stood alone, crying in the cold night.
王子は言いました。
The Prince said,
「もう一つの目を取って、あの女の子にあげてください」
"Take my other eye and give it to that girl."
ツバメはすぐにしました。
The swallow immediately objected.
「だめです。もう一つの目もなくなったら、あなたは何も見えなくなります」
"No. If you lose your other eye, you will not be able to see anything."
王子はもう一度お願いしました。
The Prince asked him once more.
ツバメは王子をしたくありませんでした。
The swallow did not want to leave the Prince alone.
しかし、女の子も助けたいと思いました。
But he also wanted to help the girl.
そして最後のサファイアを王子の目から取り、女の子のところへ飛んでいきました。
So he removed the final sapphire from the Prince's eye and flew to the girl.
ツバメは青い宝石を女の子の手の中に入れました。
The swallow placed the blue jewel in the girl's hand.
女の子は、それが高い宝石だとは知りません。
The girl did not know that it was a valuable jewel.
「きれいなガラスだ」
"What a pretty piece of glass."
そう言って、笑いながら家へ帰っていきました。
She said this and went home with a smile.
ツバメは王子のところへ戻りました。
The swallow returned to the Prince.
もう王子には、町を見るための目がありません。
The Prince no longer had eyes with which to see the town.
ツバメは言いました。
The swallow said,
「あなたは何も見えなくなりました。だから、私はずっとあなたのそばにいます」
"You cannot see anything now, so I will stay by your side forever."
王子は答えました。
The Prince answered,
「いいえ。あなたはエジプトへ行かなければなりません。ここはもうすぐ、もっと寒くなります」
"No. You must go to Egypt. It will soon become much colder here."
しかしツバメは、もう王子を一人にすることができませんでした。
But the swallow could no longer leave the Prince alone.
最初は一晩だけ手伝うつもりでした。
At first, he had planned to help for only one night.
それがになり、三晩になりました。
One night became two, and then three.
そして今、ツバメにとって王子は、とてもな友達になっていたのです。
By now, the Prince had become a very dear friend to the swallow.
「私はここに残ります」
"I will stay here."
そう言って、ツバメは王子の足元で眠りました。
With those words, the swallow slept at the Prince's feet.
Chapter 6
王子の代わりに町を見る
次の日から、ツバメは王子の目の代わりになることにしました。
From the next day, the swallow became the Prince's eyes.
王子はもう何も見ることができないので、ツバメが町を飛び、見たものを王子に話します。
Because the Prince could no longer see, the swallow flew through the town and told him what he saw.
最初、ツバメは自分が旅行で見てきた美しい場所について話しました。
At first, the swallow spoke about the beautiful places he had seen on his travels.
エジプトの大きな川や、、不思議な動物、遠い国の景色について話しました。
He spoke about Egypt's great river, the desert, strange animals, and scenery in distant lands.
王子はその話を静かに聞きました。
The Prince listened quietly to his stories.
そして言いました。
Then he said,
「世界には美しいものがたくさんあるのですね。でも、私が一番知りたいのは、この町で苦しんでいる人たちのことです。町の上を飛んで、何が見えるか教えてください」
"There are so many beautiful things in the world. But what I most want to know about is the people suffering in this town. Fly over the town and tell me what you see."
ツバメは町の中を飛びました。
The swallow flew through the town.
明るく大きな家では、お金持ちの人たちが食事をしたり、楽しそうに話したりしていました。
In bright, spacious houses, wealthy people ate meals and talked happily.
その家の外には、お金がない人が座っていました。
Outside those houses sat people who had no money.
暗い道へ行くと、お腹を空かせた子どもたちがいました。
On a dark street, there were hungry children.
橋の下では、二人の子どもが寒さから体を守るため、の体を近づけていました。
Under a bridge, two children huddled together to protect themselves from the cold.
「お腹が空いたね」
"I am hungry."
二人はそう話していました。
That was what the two children said.
しかし、その場所からもかなければなりませんでした。
But they were forced to leave that place as well.
ツバメは王子のところへ戻り、見たことをすべて話しました。
The swallow returned to the Prince and told him everything he had seen.
王子はとても悲しくなりました。
The Prince became very sad.
自分の剣についていたルビーはもうありません。
The ruby from his sword was already gone.
二つの青い目も、もうありません。
His two blue eyes were gone as well.
しかし、王子の体にはまだ金が残っていました。
But there was still gold left on the Prince's body.
王子はツバメに言いました。
The Prince spoke to the swallow.
「私の体についている金を、取ってください。そして、困っている人たちに届けてください」
"Remove the gold from my body one sheet at a time and deliver it to the people in need."
ツバメは、王子の体から薄い金を一枚ずつ取りました。
The swallow removed the thin sheets of gold from the Prince's body one by one.
そして町の中を飛び、貧しい人たちに届けました。
Then he flew through the town and delivered them to the poor.
何度も王子と町を行ったり来たりしました。
He traveled back and forth between the Prince and the town many times.
少しずつ、王子の美しい金色はなくなっていきました。
Little by little, the Prince's beautiful golden color disappeared.
しかしそので、食べ物を買うことができた人たちの顔には笑顔が戻っていきました。
But at the same time, smiles returned to the faces of people who could now buy food.
子どもたちはパンを食べることができ、になりました。
The children were able to eat bread and became healthy again.
王子の体は、もう前のように美しく輝いてはいません。
The Prince's body no longer shone beautifully as it once had.
青い宝石の目もありません。
His blue jeweled eyes were gone.
赤い宝石もありません。
The red jewel was gone too.
それでも王子は、自分が持っているものを人々に渡し続けました。
Even so, the Prince continued giving the people everything he had.
Chapter 7
冬がやってくる
やがて、町に雪が降り始めました。
Before long, snow began to fall on the town.
秋は終わり、本当の冬が来ました。
Autumn ended, and the true winter arrived.
屋根には氷ができ、道も白くなりました。
Ice formed on the roofs, and the streets turned white.
町の人たちは厚い服を着て歩いていました。
The people of the town walked around in thick clothing.
しかし、小さなツバメには暖かい服がありません。
But the little swallow had no warm clothes.
本当なら、ずっと前に暖かいエジプトへ行っているはずでした。
He should have gone to warm Egypt long before.
ツバメの体は、冷たくなっていきました。
The swallow's body grew colder day by day.
食べ物を見つけることも難しくなりました。
Finding food also became difficult.
パン屋の近くで小さなを見つけ、それを食べながら生活しました。
He found small breadcrumbs near a bakery and survived by eating them.
寒くなると、羽を何度も動かして体を暖かくしました。
When he became cold, he moved his wings again and again to warm his body.
それでも、王子のそばを離れませんでした。
Even so, he did not leave the Prince's side.
王子にはもう目がありません。
The Prince no longer had any eyes.
町の人たちも、王子が前のように美しくないため、あまり見なくなっていました。
The people of the town also stopped paying much attention to him because he was no longer beautiful.
そんな王子を一人にしたくなかったのです。
The swallow did not want to leave such a Prince alone.
ツバメは王子のことが大好きになっていました。
The swallow had come to love the Prince dearly.
しかし、冬はさらに寒くなりました。
But the winter grew even colder.
ある日、ツバメは自分の命がもう長くないことに気づきました。
One day, the swallow realized that he did not have much longer to live.
最後の力を使って、王子の肩まで飛びました。
Using his last strength, he flew up to the Prince's shoulder.
そして静かに言いました。
Then he spoke quietly.
「王子さま、さようなら」
"Goodbye, my Prince."
王子は答えました。
The Prince answered,
「やっとエジプトへ行くのですね。あなたは長い間ここにいました。暖かい場所へ行ってください」
"So you are finally going to Egypt. You have stayed here for a long time. Please go somewhere warm."
しかしツバメは、エジプトへ行くのではありませんでした。
But the swallow was not going to Egypt.
もう飛び続ける力がなかったのです。
He no longer had the strength to keep flying.
ツバメは最後に王子へキスをしました。
The swallow gave the Prince one final kiss.
そして、王子の足元に落ちました。
Then he fell at the Prince's feet.
小さなツバメは、そこで動かなくなりました。
The little swallow lay there and did not move again.
その、王子の体の中から大きな音がしました。
At that moment, a loud sound came from inside the Prince's body.
鉛でできていた王子の心が、二つに割れたのです。
The Prince's lead heart had broken in two.
王子も、大切な友達を失った悲しみにことができなかったのでしょう。
Perhaps the Prince could not endure the sadness of losing his dear friend either.
Chapter 8
美しくなくなった王子
次の日の朝、町のたちが広場を歩いていました。
The next morning, the town's mayor and officials were walking through the square.
そして、高い柱の上にいる幸福な王子を見ました。
They looked up at the Happy Prince on the tall column.
市長は驚きました。
The mayor was shocked.
以前の王子は、金色に輝いていました。
The Prince had once shone with gold.
目には美しい青い宝石があり、剣には赤い宝石がありました。
He had beautiful blue jewels for eyes and a red jewel on his sword.
しかし今は、そのすべてがありません。
But now all of them were gone.
王子の体は暗い色になり、目もなくなっていました。
The Prince's body had become dark, and he no longer had eyes.
足元には死んだツバメもいます。
The dead swallow was lying at his feet as well.
市長たちは言いました。
The mayor and the officials said,

そして、美しくない像には価値がないと考えました。
They decided that a statue without beauty had no value.
町の人たちは幸福な王子の像を柱から下ろすことにしました。
The people of the town decided to take the statue of the Happy Prince down from the column.
王子の体はへ運ばれ、熱い火の中で溶かされました。
The Prince's body was taken to a factory and melted in a hot fire.
しかし、不思議なことが起こりました。
But something strange happened.
王子の体の中にあった、二つに割れた鉛の心だけはませんでした。
Only the lead heart inside the Prince's body, which had broken in two, would not melt.
働いていた人たちは、それを見て困りました。
The workers did not know what to do with it.
「これは使えない」
"This is useless."
そう言って、割れた心を捨てました。
With those words, they threw the broken heart away.
その場所には、死んだ小さなツバメも捨てられていました。
The dead little swallow had also been thrown away in the same place.
町の人たちから見ると、金や宝石がなくなった王子にはがありませんでした。
To the people of the town, the Prince had no value once his gold and jewels were gone.
死んだ小さな鳥にも、特別な価値はありませんでした。
The dead little bird had no special value either.
Summary
本当に大切なもの
神様がに言います。
God spoke to an angel.
「この町で一番大切なものを二つ持ってきてください」
"Bring me the two most precious things in this town."
天使は町へ向かいました。
The angel went to the town.
町には、お金や美しい物がたくさんありました。
The town contained a great deal of money and many beautiful things.
大きな家もありました。
There were large houses as well.
な物を持っている人もいました。
Some people owned expensive things.
しかし天使が選んだのは、それらではありませんでした。
But the angel did not choose any of them.
天使が持ってきたのは、二つに割れた王子の鉛の心と、死んだ小さなツバメでした。
The angel brought back the Prince's lead heart, broken in two, and the dead little swallow.
神様は、その二つを見て言いました。
God looked at the two and said,
「正しいものを選びました」
"You have chosen correctly."
王子は、自分の美しい宝石や金をすべて人にあげました。
The Prince gave all his beautiful jewels and gold to others.
最後には、美しい姿まで失いました。
In the end, he even lost his beautiful appearance.
ツバメも、最初は暖かいエジプトへ行くつもりでした。
At first, the swallow had also intended to go to warm Egypt.
しかし、困っている人を助ける王子を一人にできず、寒い町に残りました。
But he could not leave the Prince, who was helping people in need, alone, so he stayed in the cold town.
そして最後には、自分の命まで失いました。
In the end, he even lost his life.
町の人たちが大切だと思ったのは、王子のにある金や宝石でした。
The people of the town valued the gold and jewels on the outside of the Prince.
それがなくなると、「もう価値がない」と言いました。
When those were gone, they said, "He has no value anymore."
しかし神様が大切だと思ったのは、王子の心とツバメでした。
But what God valued was the Prince's heart and the swallow.
見た目は美しくありません。
They were not beautiful to look at.
お金にもなりません。
They were not worth any money.
それでも、その二つには、人を思うやさしさがありました。
Even so, both of them held a kindness that cared for others.
